![]() Years later, when the studios released their old film libraries to television, I discovered that, when she was younger, that same Joan Crawford was not only a first-rate actress ("Mildred Pierce") but when she was VERY young, naturally beautiful and vulnerable ("Grand Hotel"). Occasionally, the second feature ("Torch Song," "Female on the Beach," "The Story of Esther Costello") featured an actress named Joan Crawford, whose gargoyle face was scarier to me than any horror film we saw. Reviewed by sdiner82 Vote: 1/10Īs a child, my parents took me and my sister to the movies (this was the early 1950s) every week when the double-bill changed. A camp classic? An unforgettable laugh riot? You can have it. I think mommie dearest is a well made and well acted film telling the very sad true story of actress Joan Crawford and her private life and strained relationships with her children with with whom she woefully mistreated. I don't exactly understand some of the negative reviews this movie has received both when it first came out and over the years. The chemistry between Joan and Christina is good here and the acting is very dramatic and very intense, as it should be. In many scenes, a teenage Chrisrina tries desperately to gain her mothers love, but she never really receives it. Throughout the film Joan is depicted by Dunaway as a self obsessed, selfish, child abusing alcoholic that never really gives her love to her children. She applies to an adoption agency, but her application is denied, so she goes through some loopholes, pulls some strings, and adopts her daughter, Christina, and then her son Christopher. In the beginning, we are introduced to ms Crawford as a young actress, at the height of her career, working at Metro Goldwyn Mayer, no children, and two divorces. In my honest opinion, mommie dearest is very well acted, Faye Dunaway blew me away in her brutally honest portrayal of Hollywood legend Joan Crawford. This film and the book it is based off of tells the story of how Joan Crawford behaved behind closed doors with her children, how she abused them, had crazy/wild outbursts, which sometimes turned violent. Our favorite scene: Joan Crawford dazedly replacing her ailing daughter in the cast of a daytime TV soap opera.Mommie Dearest is a film based on the book of the same title written by Joan Crawford's daughter, Christina Crawford. Surprisingly, one emerges from Mommie Dearest with more sympathy for the monstrous but intensely vulnerable Crawford than for her whining daughter (played as an adult by Diana Scarwid, and as a child by Mara Hobel). This is the film with the notorious "wire coat hanger" scene, just in case you need a reminder. According to the film (and the book that preceded it), Joan Crawford was a licentious, child-beating behemoth, who stalked and postured through life as though it was one of her own pictures-more Strait-jacket than Mildred Pierce. The 1981 film version of this tome was evidently meant to be taken seriously, but the operatic direction by Frank Perry and the over-the-top portrayal of Joan Crawford by Faye Dunaway (whose makeup is remarkable) has always seemed to inspire loud laughter whenever and where-ever the film is shown. When her adoptive mother Joan Crawford died in 1977, erstwhile actress/author Christina Crawford and her brother Christopher were left out of Joan Crawford's will, "for reasons which are well known to them." Industryites have suggested that it may have been this posthumous act of rejection rather than an alleged lifetime of parental abuse that inspired Christina Crawford to pen her scathing autobiography Mommie Dearest.

When Marty (and Marty's girlfriend and future wife, Jennifer) get into the car, Marty is worried that the car won't have enough road to get up to 88 miles per hour (the speed needed to trigger the time-traveling aspect of the vehicle) but Brown informs him, "Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads." The car then begins to fly and takes off into the future and then "To Be Continued." flashes on to the screen. ![]() While celebrating these new changes in his life, eccentric scientist Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) shows up in the time traveling DeLorean car and tells Marty that he needs him to go with him to 2015 because something needs to be done about Marty's children. The basics like free for all, team deathmatch, domination and search and destroy are as solid as ever, and variations like hardcore add to the mix, as do third person matches and the various bomb defusing and HQ game types.Ī few problems do still remain hidden within this gamut of goodness, though. I’d have liked a few more, though, but that will, no doubt, be taken care of by the inevitable (and shamelessly money grabbing) DLC. Each map is well tailored to the many and varied game modes, and none feel like filler material. ![]() These are refined creations that all feature a great balance of hot zones, choke points and ample scope for tactical play. If you thought COD4‘s maps were well designed and thought out, just wait until you play MW2‘s selection of battlefields. ![]() No multiplayer game is complete without maps, and MW2 is excellently served in this department. Instead it helps to liven up any game, making each and every battle a real warzone.Īs well as the major updates, there’s also a few other little tweaks, such as the addition of unlockable call signs that are displayed onscreen to your unfortunate foes as you kill them, and the ability to customise your kill streaks, choosing which strikes you can call in. This is a great feature than can change the tide of a game, and, contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t only pander to less experienced players. This air dropped crate contains a random support item, such as UAV, stealth bomber strike or even the chance to man the guns of an AC-130 and decimate the battlefield. Perhaps the biggest change in the kill streak system, though, is the care package. Get 25 kills in a row and you can quickly end the game in a victory, regardless of the score, by nuking everyone, including yourself. There are even high-level streaks (up to 25 kills) that let you call in a heavily armed Pave Low gunship, fire off an EMP to kill everyone’s status display and targeting, and then there’s the coup de grace, a tactical nuke. These include various helicopter support units, a harrier strike, guided missiles, counter UAVs to block the enemy UAV, radar jamming and mounted auto-turrets. While COD4 was limited to UAVs, air strikes and helicopter support, MW2 has thrown open the doors of variety and has a plethora of new support options. Kill streaks have been radically altered this time, both to reward expert players and to aid newcomers. These include ‘death streak’ perks, such as stealing the loadout of the player who killed you, a boost of health and the martyrdom perk, which lets you drop a live grenade on your death for some payback. No other online FPS is so sleek in its approach.Ī new perk system has also been introduced for players who find themselves struggling. ![]() The simply flawless control system, precise and smooth aiming and general feel of the game is unparalleled. So, now that the game has been out for a few weeks, let’s see just how good the multiplayer mode really is.įans of the series will be pleased to know that all of the features of COD4‘s multiplayer are present and correct. In fact, with the addition of the new Spec Ops mode, this instalment ups the online fragging ante to the next level, unfortunately for every other FPS developer out there. Luckily, COD doesn’t simply focus on a single player experience, and while Infinity Ward always heaps plenty of attention on the single player experience (keep it up, boys), it’s multiplayer where COD‘s real strength lies, and MW2 is certainly no different. The single player campaign is every bit as impressive as the story of COD4, with twists, turns, shocks and the heavily attacked and controversial airport scene, but, like COD4, it’s also pretty damn short. While not a revolutionary departure from COD4, MW2 boasts enough in the way of tweaks and fine tuning to emerge as one of the best FPS titles of all time. This is for good reason, of course, as Modern Warfare 2 is simply stunning. Few would argue Modern Warfare 2’s status as the single biggest console release of 2009, and it’s a title that’s already had an obscene amount of praise lavished upon it. With R Markdown, you can very easily produce reports, whether the format has to be Word, PowerPoint, a website, a PDF document or just the raw data to Excel. Over the last years, R Markdown has really made an interesting development. Still, as working with any statistical package, you will have to have knowledge about what you are doing (statistically) and what you are willing to accomplish. You will notice that writing syntaxes in R is a lot more nifty and clever than in SPSS. If you sometimes write syntaxes in SPSS to run a complete analysis or to ‘automate’ some of your work, you could do this a lot less time in R. They may be a bit flexible, but you can probably never create that very specific publication-ready plot without using other (paid) software. The flexibility in transforming, arranging, grouping and summarising data, or drawing plots, is endless - with SPSS, SAS or Stata you are bound to their algorithms and format styles. See below for a demonstration.īecause you write the syntax yourself, you can do anything you want. These facts and properties are often needed to clean existing data, which would be very inconvenient in a software package without reliable reference data. Or that all species of Klebiella are resistant to amoxicillin and that Floxapen ® is a trade name of flucloxacillin. SPSS, SAS and Stata will never know what a valid MIC value is or what the Gram stain of E. Among other things, it adds reliable reference data to R to help you with the data cleaning and analysis. So there may even be a lot more than 14,000 packages out there.īottom line is, you can really extend it yourself or ask somebody to do this for you. Aside from this official channel, there are also developers who choose not to submit to CRAN, but rather keep it on their own public repository, like GitHub. All these packages were peer-reviewed before publication. The official R network (CRAN) features more than 16,000 packages at the time of writing, our AMR package being one of them.
